BEACH-COMBING: At low tide, there is 3 km from the beach where you can walk. Occasionally you might see a local fisherman but no-one else.
CULTURE: Manda Bay is within a 20-minute boat ride of the ancient Arab town of Lamu, which was established in 1370. It is now a World Heritage Site and is one of the oldest continually inhabited towns in East Africa and well worth a visit if you enjoy architecture and a walk back in time. Takwa Ruins is an old settlement site and accessible on a high tide by boat.
BIRD WATCHING: There are a large variety of water birds as well as dry country scrub species. A true spectacle is the flocks of northern carmine bee-eaters that seasonally roost on the mangrove islands adjacent to Manda Bay, making for incredible evening viewing. See Bird list. Manda Bird List
WATER SPORTS: Manda Bay is known for its excellent boating activities. Paddleboards and kayaks are available for use all day, whilst windsurfing and Laser Sailing are available for proficient sailors or accompanied by one of our staff. At an extra cost, waterskiing, banana rides and inflatable tube rides, line fishing, fly-fishing, bottom fishing, and snorkeling are available – and provide hours of fun! A week-long kite surfing course, instructed by a professional instructor, can be arranged at a fee.
DHOW EXCURSION: We can arrange for a local sailing boat to take you out for the day and experience a fun day out.
INSHORE FISHING: Depending on the weather and the tides, we can offer a fishing experience for everyone from the very young to the avid fly fisherman within the bay in one of our small boats which can be fun and rewarding.
SPA TREATMENTS: With prior notice, we can arrange a beauty therapist to come from Lamu to give massages, manicures, and pedicures.
